Naslovni lik, koga tumači Alan Lad, je profesionalni ubica Filip Rejven koga, nakon što je likvidirao jednog ucenjivača (Frank Ferguson), prevari njegov poslodavac (Laird Cregar). Radnja prikazuje kako se ubica nastoji osvetiti svojim poslodavcima povezanim sa hemijskom industrijom dok ga istovremeno istražuje policija na čelu sa detektivom Majklom Krejnom (Robert Preston), a čija će devojka Elen Grejem (Victoria Lake) doći u opasnost. Ovaj film je snimljen nedugo nakon ulaska SAD u Drugi svetski rat, a što se odrazilo na scenario koji koristi motiv petokolonaške sabotaže.
